Hopkins County Accountability Results
The Kentucky Department of Education has released annual School Report Card data from the 2021-2022 school year. This includes the assessment results for students who were in grades 3-8 and 10-11 in spring 2022.
This is the first time since 2019 that accountability status is being reported by the state. These results have been released as part of a new system that looks different than the one to which the community was previously accustomed.
Each student who participated in last spring’s Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) will receive individual results and each school has an overall report. Student achievement is still reported in terms of Novice, Apprentice, Proficient, or Distinguished levels. The overall accountability system provides a color-coded rating for all schools, ranging from red (lowest) to blue (highest). In future years, information will also be released on a “Change” indicator that shows improvement from the previous year.
“This is a new system for Kentucky schools,” said Hopkins County Schools Superintendent Amy Smith. “Our school staff has already started collaborating to analyze the results and develop the best plan to help our students and schools progress,”
Indicators included in the new accountability system are state assessment results in reading, math, science, social studies, and writing; English learning progress, and quality of school climate and safety. High schools are also measured on postsecondary readiness and graduation rate.
“We encourage our parents to look at the results indicating their children’s achievement,” said Dr. Andy Belcher, district director of assessment. “We want to work in partnership with them to make progress and continue their growth as young scholars. Hopkins County Schools is committed to providing each of our students with an excellent school experience including finding the best ways to prepare them for their individual futures.”

Green (High) - Earlington Elementary (72.6), Hanson Elementary (74.2), Madisonville North Hopkins High (71.4)
Yellow (Medium) - Grapevine Elementary (53.7), James Madison Middle (59.2), Jesse Stuart Elementary (64.8), South Hopkins MIddle (52.0), Southside Elementary (56.7), West Broadway Elementary (67.8), West Hopkins Middle (52.9)

District-wide, the elementary, middle, and high school levels are all classified as Yellow.
Three schools were identified as Targeted Supports and Improvement (TSI). These schools are Browning Springs Middle, Madisonville North Hopkins High, and South Hopkins Middle. TSI schools are those with a subgroup of students that scored in the bottom 5 percent. This is related to students with disabilities at each of these schools as well as African-American students at BSMS. The state provides training and resources to help improve these students’ achievement.
Moving Forward
The district will offer a professional development that is open to all certified staff on Nov. 8.
Two topics that will be covered relate directly to what recently released data revealed. These topics are support for TSI schools and extra training on assessment for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Teachers and administrators will use information from the state accountability system along with that from local assessments to determine what will work best for each student.
“Results such as these help us identify where each student is and then develop plans to help support their academic journey,” Belcher said. “We want to see each student achieve as much success as possible. We are diving deep into the data to see how we can help them achieve more and ultimately reach their dreams as an adult.” Additional information is available online on the School Report Cards.
